Books up to 5/23/2010

  1. Spook – Mary Roach
  2. Blink – Malcolm Gladwell
  3. Teenage – Jon Savage
  4. The Year of Magical Thinking – Joan Didion (heavy read but worth it)
  5. The Pact – Jodie Picoult (was not particularly impressed by the ending but it was an easy read)
  6. Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life – Neil Strauss (OMG hilarious, quick and easy to read)
  7. The Center of the Universe: A Memoir – Nancy Bachrach (funny but a slow read, trying not to give up on it – did not appreciate the end)
  8. (AB) Voluntary Madness – Norah Vincent (a reporter commits herself to three different mental institutions to see the differences … and has her own mental breakdown while doing so – a thrilling read)
  9. Misconception: A Novel – Ryan Bodinout (super quick read, in fact I read it in one night because I couldn’t sleep)
  10. (AB) Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction – David Scheff (heavy but a REALLY good read thus far)
  11. Teachers Have It Easy: The Big Sacrifices and Small Salaries of America’s Teachers (blown away by this book; don’t know that I love teaching THIS much)
  12. Gone to the Crazies – Alison Weaver (quick, heavy read)
  13. The Lost Years: Surviving a Mother & Daughter’s Worst Nightmare – by Kristina Wandzilak and Constance Curry (I was on a mental health/drug addiction kick and this was another quick easy read. Very well-written.)
  14. Leaving Dirty Jersey: A Crystal Meth Memoir – James Salant (I was a bit disappointed by the ending of this book. It just fell short.)
  15. (AB) I am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil & I Want to be Your Class President – Josh Lieb – hysterical. I could never really GET whether it was being written for adults or teens. HYSTERICAL!
  16. Hell is Other Parents – And other tales of maternal combustion – Deborah Kogen (hilarious and easy to read, a recommendation for any parent, or a person who works with children)
  17. Ask Me About My Divorce: Women open up about moving on – Candace Walsh (I need to dedicate an entire blog entry to this book. I need to write my own essay.)
  18. (AB) The Good Earth – Pearl S. Buck (I didn’t read this in high school and am thankful. I enjoyed LISTENING to it, but don’t know that I would have really enjoyed actually reading it.
  19. Why Is My Mother Getting a Tattoo? And other questions I wish I’d never have to ask – Jancee Dunn (funny but not as great as the Kogan book)
  20. (AB) A Little Bit Wicked – Kristin Chenowith (she reads this copy and it’s rather amusing)

  22. Chalked Up: Inside Elite Gymnastics’ Merciless Coaching, Overzealous Parents, Eating Disorders, and Elusive Olympic Dreams – Jennifer Sey (quick and easy read. Interesting if you’re curious about gymnastics.)
  23. (AB) Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Sex and Science – Mary Roach (hilarious, I love Mary Roach’s stuff)
  24. Escape – Carolyn Jessup (book about escaping FLDS polygamy marriage. Intense read but great.)
  25. Born to Lose - Lee (boring, don’t read it. No, really. Skip it.)
  26. Cheer – Kate Torgovnick (so far so good)
